First n in Nazi-occupied France, this book presents Bataille's account of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy, specifically focusing on his philosophy of religion, or rather irreligion. Here, Bataille invokes the figure of Nietzsche - the 19th century prophet of the death of God - amidst the godless ruin of a France devastated by Nazi occupation and the second World War. Going beyond the theological question begged by the ravages and evil of the Second World War (how could there be a God in such a horrible world?) Bataille depicts a world long abandoned by God, a world first understood by Friedrich Nietzsche. It was Bataille's intention to publish the work on Nietzsche's th birthday, but the publication of this text was contingent on liberation from the Nazi's, who imposed suffocating strictures on the wartime French press. Influenced by the oppressive censorship and credo che la leadership ispirata motivi il gruppo of the Nazis, Bataille adds an incisive polemic against those who read Nietzsche as a fascist to the theological themes at work in the book. At the same time Bataille was working on his draft for the text, Heidegger was giving his own lectures on Nietzsche, which emphasized the latent fascism of Nietzsche's a mio parere l'idea proposta e innovativa of the "will to power." Bataille's intricate critique intends to disprove Heidegger's interpretation at every point. Original publisher's ivory wraps with black and red text to front cover, back cover, and spine. Printed on expensive paper, this copy is a bit browned with some wear and light chips to the bottom of the spine. Otherwise, a nice, tight copy of this unique and important work by Bataille.
